PSSD (Pressure Specified Sensory Device)

Revolutionary Diagnostic Testing for Peripheral Neuropathy

PSSD (Pressure Specified Sensory Device) is a revolutionary diagnostic testing device developed by A. Lee Dellon, MD and Neurologists to accurately measure patients' peripheral nerve function.  Dr. Dellon is a Plastic Surgeon and Hand Surgeon and is faculty at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland.  He worked with an Aerospace Engineer in developing the technology for the PSSD.

The PSSD measures cutaneous pressure threshold, static and moving one and two-point discrimination.  It uses state-of-the-art, FDA cleared, computer assisted testing devices.  The PSSD allows for follow-up testing at regular intervals to monitor loss of sensation and development of pain from peripheral neuropathy.  Its measurements are traceable to the National Institute of Standards and Technology.  The computer-based sensory testing system with user friendly software for full testing and screen testing modes uses no electrical stimulation.  It produces printed patient reports for documentation.  The testing is reimbursed by Medicare and commercial insurance payors.

Neurosensory testing with the PSSD is a painless, non-invasive technique for assessing nerve damage by measuring the pressure threshold felt in the skin.  By testing an area of the skin that corresponds to a specific nerve, the extent of nerve damage can be determined by the amount of pressure needed for a person to feel the touch of the testing device.  An individual with a healthy nerve can feel very light touch and has a low pressure threshold.  However, a person with a nerve that has been damaged by compression or neuropathy will require a greater than normal pressure for the touch to be felt, and therefore have an abnormal pressure threshold.

Dr. Dellon has established the Dellon Institute for Peripheral Nerve Surgery in Baltimore, Maryland to train surgeons through a Fellowship Program in the surgical procedures to decompress affected nerves causing the peripheral neuropathy diagnosed with the PSSD.
